Cycling Power Challenges

Cycling Power Challenge
06 Nov

Whilst I can run I still don’t feel my body is balanced enough to do so without re-enforcing bad movement patterns. This is due to lingering imbalances from what was diagnosed as hip osteoarthritis. In the meantime I’m finding spin classes to be an awesome way to build CV fitness. I’m a member of my local Lifestyle Fitness gym; they have spin classes every day so I’m never short of options. The only downside to spin is that it’s not progressive – it’s difficult to ensure that you’re working hard enough to improve fitness levels. That’s where my Cycling Power Challenge comes in.

Pullups – 6100 in 68 Days

6100 Pullups in 68 Days
27 Oct

I started out with the intention of completing the 5000 pullups in 68 days GORUCK challenge. By the third day I somehow managed to get myself into competition with Eric Ervin who had completed the 5k challenge in 2014. His daily pullup numbers were still on the GORUCK challenge spreadsheet so I decided to match his number each day and raise it by 1.  Eric had completed 6030 pullups in 63 days so suddenly I’d put myself under a lot more pressure! Forearm pain quickly set in, and despite hanging in for a few extra days with the use of hook wrist straps and elbow straps I eventually decided that a tactical retreat was in order.  At the next attempt (probably January) I’ll be better prepared.

2017 Body Recomposition Challenge

2017 Body Recomposition Challenge
26 Oct

Background This is my main challenge for 2017. I started out the year with a Personal Trainer that specializes in bodybuilding. I worked with him for 6 months finishing off the year on my own. The reason for this particular challenge? Towards the end of 2016 I’d got myself into a real slump fitness wise. […]

Race to 100 Pullups

Race to 100 Pullups
26 Oct

I first attempted this challenge as a ‘challenge within a challenge’ during my 2014 GORUCK 2,500 pullups in 68 days. When you have to get large numbers of pullups completed day in and day out you need little mind games to keep things interesting; better still if you have others to compete with! Basically you try to get 100 pullups done in the shortest time possible. It’s a challenge I plan on doing regularly in an attempt to improve my PB.  My 2014 attempt was captured on video – “Benny Hill” style!

Maximum Number of Pullups in 24 Hours

Maximum Pullups in 24 Hours
25 Oct

This was another spin off from the 2014 GORUCK 2.5k pullups in 68 days challenge. Matt Tiller joined the challenge late and the support group had got pretty quiet. He’d ran out of time and had to complete 600 pullups in one day. I stayed online with him to give him a bit of support and stupidly agreed to join him in a ‘most in 24 hours’ challenge a couple of days later. It was really good fun – we posted our progress online and gave each other plenty of support. Matt managed 1000 and I managed 670 – although it took me 5 hours! I will do this again one day.
